Privacy Policy

Last updated 5 August 2026

This policy explains what personal information MADE BY MATTER PTY LTD (ACN 699 846 896) collects, why we collect it, and what you can do about it. We are a digital studio registered in Queensland, Australia.

It covers this website and the apps we publish, including Nitpick, our daily word puzzle app. Where something applies only to Nitpick, we say so.

We handle personal information under the Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). If you are in the United Kingdom or the European Economic Area, the UK GDPR and GDPR also apply to you, and we set out your rights under those laws below.

The short version

We collect as little as we can. We do not sell your information, we do not show advertising, and we do not use analytics or tracking software in our apps. Nitpick can be played without an account at all.

What Nitpick collects

Nitpick creates an anonymous account for you the first time you open it. This is what holds your streak. It contains no name, no email address and nothing that identifies you personally.

Your puzzle history
Which days you solved, how long each took, how many guesses and hints you used. This is what draws your streak and your statistics. Without it the app has no memory.
Your settings
Your chosen puzzle topic and the time of day you would like a reminder.
Your time zone offset
How many minutes your device is ahead of or behind UTC. We need this to know which calendar day you are in, so your streak does not break because you live east of London. It is a single number and cannot locate you — an offset of +10 hours covers Brisbane, Vladivostok and Guam alike.
Your email address and name — only if you choose to sign in
Signing in is optional and exists for one reason: so your streak survives a new phone. If you sign in with Apple or Google we receive the email address and display name they give us. If you sign in with an email address and password, we receive that address. If you use Apple's Hide My Email, we never see your real address.

What Nitpick does not collect

What this website collects

This site is a set of static pages. It sets no cookies, runs no analytics and has no contact form. If you email us, we hold that email in order to reply to it.

Our hosting provider records standard server logs, including IP addresses, as part of delivering the site securely. We do not use these logs to build any profile of you.

Why we are allowed to hold it

Under the Australian Privacy Principles, we collect only what is reasonably necessary to run the app. If UK or EU law applies to you, our lawful bases are:

Who else handles it

We use Google Firebase to run Nitpick: authentication, the database holding your puzzle history, the functions that check your answers, and push notifications. Google processes this data on our instructions as our service provider. Data is stored on Google servers in the United States.

If you are in the UK or EEA, that transfer relies on the Standard Contractual Clauses and the UK Addendum, which Google incorporates into its terms. Google's own privacy information is at firebase.google.com/support/privacy.

We do not share your personal information with anyone else. We do not sell it, and we have never disclosed it to an overseas recipient other than as described above.

How long we keep it

Your account and puzzle history are kept for as long as you use the app. If you delete your account, we delete them straight away — see below.

We keep anonymous, aggregated statistics — for example, how many people solved a given day's puzzle and how long it typically took. These carry no link back to any individual and are not deleted, because they describe the puzzle rather than the player.

Server logs are retained for up to 30 days for security and troubleshooting.

Deleting your data

In Nitpick, open Settings and choose Delete account (or Delete my data if you are playing without an account). This removes your profile, your entire puzzle history and your sign-in record permanently. It cannot be undone.

If you have already uninstalled the app, use our deletion request page and we will remove your data within 30 days.

Your rights

You can ask us to give you a copy of the personal information we hold about you, correct it if it is wrong, or delete it. Email hello@madebymatter.com.au and we will respond within 30 days.

If you are in the UK or EEA you also have the right to object to processing, to ask us to restrict it, and to receive your data in a portable format. Where we rely on your consent, you may withdraw it at any time.

Security

Data is encrypted in transit and at rest by Firebase. Access to production data is limited to those who need it. Puzzle answers are held on the server and never sent to your device, which is why answers are checked by our servers rather than in the app.

No system is perfectly secure. If a data breach ever occurred that was likely to cause you serious harm, we would notify you and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, as the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme requires.

Children

Our apps are intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has given us information, email us and we will delete it.

Changes

If we change this policy we will update the date at the top of this page. If a change materially affects how we handle your information, we will tell you in the app before it takes effect.

Complaints and contact

For any privacy question, or to make a complaint, email hello@madebymatter.com.au. We will acknowledge your complaint within 5 business days and respond within 30 days.

If you are not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au. In the UK you may complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
